Some Key Points
Here are some key points from today's class:
1. Tobacco smoke contains harmful chemicals which have many severe health effects
2. The harmful chemicals which we will be focusing on are: nicotine, tar, carbon monoxide, carcinogens and irritants. Refer to the table in your text book for the effects of each.
3. Tobacco smoke causes many long term as well as short term harmful effects on the body. Refer to the diagram in the text "The effects of smoking on the body"
4. There are also many serious diseases which smoking can cause, such as: lung cancer, heart diseases, bronchitis and emphysema
5. A passive smoker is someone who does not smoke but breathes in tobacco smoke (second hand smoke)
6. Second hand smoke can be just as dangerous as smoking a cigarette as passive smokers suffer from lung cancer and smokers cough.
